de | en | Il ritrovamento. On the Villa Doria Pamphili estate, along the western slopes of the Gianicolo Hill, over the centuries a vast graveyard was uncovered which, starting in Roman times. A comples of tombs dating from the Late Republican and Imperial age was found near the Casino del Bel Respiro. Two are outstanding: the Caius Scribonius Menophilus. columbarium where the frescoes are still intact, and the Large Columbarium, where the frescoes on display here were found. It was excavated in 1838, and the large half-buried room which was to hold more than five hundred lucules is still visible. For purposes of conservation, in 1922 the frescoes were removed and re-assembled in the Museo delle Terme di Diocleziano; thanks to recent restoration a wide selection of them can be admired in this gallery. | 4000x3000px | 4.0MB | Originalbild |
